 Saltwater Fly Fishing

South Florida is home to some world class Saltwater Fly Fishing all year long.  It's one of the only places in the world you can catch a Grand Slam even in the winter time. (Bonefish, Permit, & Tarpon)  Our style of fishing is much harder than other destinations because the water is very clear and the fish are smarter.  But with lots of practice and help from our experienced backcountry fishing guides you can have the time of your life.

Grand Slam = Bonefish, Permit, & Tarpon

Generally speaking comparing Saltwater Fly Fishing to Freshwater Fly Fishing is really comparing apples and oranges.  Typically, the rods we use here in Florida are 8-12 weight fly rods depending on the size and species of fish we are targeting. For bonefish the common size would be an 8 weight. For Permit and medium sized Tarpon a 10 weight.  And for large Tarpon we use a 12 weight.  Sometimes we get sporty and target juvenile Tarpon and use 5-7 weights depending on just how "Juvenile" they really are.

Bonefish = 7 or 8 Weight Fly Rods (Floating Line)

Permit = 9 or 10 Weight Fly Rods (Floating Line)

Tarpon = 10 Weight MId size Fish (25-60 LBS)

Tarpon = 12 Weight Large Fish (60-200 LBS)

Juvenile Tarpon = 5 - 8 Weights

Snook = 8 - 10 Weights (Floating Line)

Redfish = 7 - 10 Weights (Floating LIne)

For less experienced fly casters we often recommend fishing in the Backcountry Everglades waters.  We target Snook, Redfish, and Tarpon on the endless dirty water flats.  This dirty water has a tendency to "Dumb-Down" fish so an angler has better odds of catching fish.  South Florida has a learning curve for most casters and our main goal is for you to have a great time and catch lots of fish.  So if you are going to book multiple days a good idea is plan your trip so you start out fishing in the Everglades and then work your way into more difficult fishing like Bonefish, Permit, and Tarpon fishing in clear water.
